Workshop on Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks for Pain Management Inaugurated at KIMS

A two-day hands-on workshop on ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for acute pain management was inaugurated on June 17 at KIMS. The event was in collaboration with the International Network for Critical Ultrasound (INCUS), a global movement championing real-time diagnostics in emergency and critical care.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. (Dr.) Siddhartha Mishra, Professor and Head of Emergency Medicine at KIMS, highlighted the need for immediate and effective pain relief in emergency scenarios. Nerve blocks, especially ultrasound-guided ones, can offer targeted and rapid pain alleviation, he said, stressing the importance of hands-on training for young doctors in this critical area.

Officiating Medical Superintendent of KIMS, Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar Patnaik, noted that the focus of the workshop was on acute pain management using guided nerve blocks, which is a game-changer in emergency medicine practices.

Prof. (Dr.) R. C. Das reiterated KIMS’s strong emphasis on emergency medicine, pointing out the significance of managing trauma-related pain through advanced techniques like nerve blocks. “Pain is one of the biggest challenges in trauma care. The focus on guided nerve block is thus a very important step,” he observed.

Prof. (Dr.) Sukhdev Nayak, Head of Emergency Medicine at IMS and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, hailed the workshop as a first-of-its-kind in Odisha. He also touched on the potential role of artificial intelligence in studying pain management and advocated for a holistic approach to pain that includes physical, mental, and even social dimensions.
Dr. Sanjeev Bhoi, Head of INCUS World, shared insights from a joint AIIMS and NITI Aayog study which revealed significant gaps in emergency medicine infrastructure and training across India. “We found that systems in both government and private hospitals were not adequately prepared. This led to policy changes, especially in training frontline workers. It’s important for institutions to start DNB programmes in emergency medicine,” he urged.

Advisor to the Founder, Dr. R. N. Samanta, addressed the gathering and highlighted the visionary support of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS. He spoke about Dr. Samanta’s simple lifestyle and his consistent encouragement of academic and medical excellence through initiatives like this workshop.

The guest faculties from Department of Emergency of different Institute were felicitated during the programme. The Department of Anatomy, KIMS along with the Department of Emergency Medicine, KIMS are the prime partners where Dr. Prajyan Paramita Samanta HOD Anatomy KIMS pivoted the workshop to make it a huge success.

Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Benazir Maherin, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the event’s inaugural session. The workshop helped to enhance the clinical proficiency of medical professionals and further strengthen emergency care delivery in the region.

World No Tobacco Day 2025 Observed at KIMS

The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2025 was observed at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, in continuation to the grand celebrations of the last year of 2024, wherein a Tobacco Cessation Clinic was inaugurated as per the MOHFW directives.

The Departments of Community Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Psychiatry of KIMSKIIT University jointly observed the theme “Unmasking the Appeal” in the last week of May 2025. Various events were held to raise awareness among the general public with the involvement of interns, postgraduate students, and faculty members.

The Department of Community Medicine took the lead role as the Coordinating department and the following activities were undertaken as Interdepartmental initiatives both in the hospital as well as in the field practice areas of the department.

A pledge was read by Dr. Krishna Mishra, Associate Prof. Community Medicine, stating the firm conviction of health professionals to demean and discourage all Tobacco consumption, in any form, by any person.  A strong crowd of over 100 doctors attended this oath taking.

There were poster presentations by interns of the departments of Community Medicine, Psychiatry and Pulmonary Medicine covering various aspects of the WNTD 2025 theme. A role play in the local language was enacted by the Interns to showcase the deleterious effects of tobacco on health, and on families and it also emphasized the role of the family and peer group to strengthen cessation programmes in a very lucid and entertaining fashion.

The play was staged in the open Cafeteria amid Principal and Dean, Prof. (Dr.) R.C. Das; Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Manas Ranjan Behera and Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Aswini Sharma, besides key faculties of the 3 departments. They appreciated and applauded the students for their efforts. The attendees were the general public, caregivers, OPD attendees,  and at the end of the play the onlookers were encouraged to ask their queries and the same was addressed by the team.

A quiz was arranged by the Department of Pulmonary Medicine among the postgraduate students of all the three years. There were 4 teams in all and the quiz masters were Dr. Suman Kumar Jagaty (Associate Professor) and Dr. Swadip Mishra (Assistant Professor).The screening and counselling services were provided by the Departments of Pulmonary Medicine and Psychiatry at a dedicated hour and the services were availed by all those who visited the OPDs. Various banners displaying the valuable information, the available services and the need for the same were kept in conspicuous areas to grab attention of the maximum number of patients. The World No Tobacco Day 2025 celebration at the Tobacco Cessation Clinic, Department of Psychiatry, KIMS, Bhubaneswar on May 31, 2025 had enthusiastic participation from departmental mental health professionals during a focused one-hour program centered on the WHO theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.” Prof. (Dr.) Sudipta Das, Prof. (Dr.) Pranab Mahapatra, Dr. Udit Panda, Dr. Jigyansa Pattnaik, Dr. Sikha Adil, and Dr. Dibyendu Mohanty, along with all senior and junior residents, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, nursing staff, and medical interns attended the event.

The program had detailed discussions on the theme and importance of World No Tobacco Day, with particular emphasis on non-pharmacological management approaches for tobacco cessation, including evidence-based behavioral interventions, counseling techniques, and psychological support strategies, while also addressing crucial aspects of stigma reduction associated with tobacco dependence to promote a supportive environment for individuals seeking cessation.

The celebration reinforced the institution’s commitment to combating tobacco use through a multidisciplinary approach, emphasizing how tobacco industries manipulate consumers, particularly youth, through deceptive marketing strategies and appealing product designs. The program successfully highlighted the role of mental health professionals in tobacco cessation, recognizing the complex interplay between tobacco dependence and psychiatric conditions, while demonstrating a unified approach to tobacco control essential for providing comprehensive care to individuals seeking to quit tobacco.

Dr. Sai Chandan Das, Associate Professor, envisaged the  event aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use. As part of the observance, a screening camp was organized. Nearly 30 patients attended the camp, where they underwent free oral health check-ups conducted by Dr. Kiran Kumar Mishra from Dental College. Awareness sessions were conducted by Dr. V.K. Sengupta and other doctors, who highlighted the long-term consequences of tobacco use. Educational materials such as posters and banners were displayed to reinforce key messages.

The event received positive feedback from the local community, with many appreciating the department’s efforts in bringing such awareness activities to rural settings. Mr. Sangram, Senior Manager, played a pivotal role in facilitating all the logistics required for the event, significantly contributing to its overall success. The event concluded on a positive note, with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Chetan Agrawal, acknowledging the public for making the event impactful and meaningful.

There was an awareness talk about the various harmful effects of tobacco, the marketing tactics and available screening and counselling methods to tackle tobacco related diseases was delivered amongst the OPD attendees by Prof. (Dr.) Ipsita Debata and other faculty as well as PGsThe team was led by Prof. (Dr.) Ipsita Debata. She conducted a group discussion among the interested candidates and it was a quite interactive session. The way ahead for encouragement for cessation was re-enforced by Dr. Debata. Various IEC materials (some made by students) were used for the same. The OPD had a dedicated screening unit towards the observation of this day of public health importance. A rally was also organized to emphasize on the health hazards due to tobacco.

The insight of the health sector is to reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases, especially among the youth. The quality of life, behavioral issues due to tobacco and tobacco product consumption, its effect on health, and methods to quit the same were explained to all those who seeked help. There were various banners and IEC materials put up across the various campuses of the institute to promote a tobacco free campus. The postgraduate students, Dr. Jyotiranjan Sahoo and Dr. Jyotiska Mukherjee(PGTs) played an active role in this activity.

The whole observation was supported by the faculty, PGs, staff and interns of all the three departments and came to a smooth on 31st May after the above-mentioned series of events.

All three departments heartily acknowledged the support of the institutional and administrative heads in this public health campaign, and, as a note of appreciation, gave away an Appreciation certificate to the faculty, postgraduates and Interns who made the week so engrossing and participatory. First Allogeneic Donor Bone Marrow Transplant Successfully Performed on a Teenager at KIMS

In a major achievement for the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), doctors have successfully performed a rare allogeneic bone marrow transplant on a 17-year-old female patient diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare genetic blood disorder. She had been undergoing cancer chemotherapy for six months before being considered for a bone marrow transplant.

The procedure was an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, where healthy bone marrow from a donor is infused into a patient. In this case, the donor was the patient’s brother. The transplant was challenging due to the rarity of the disorder and the complex preparation involved, but it was carried out successfully by the expert team at KIMS.

This is one of the rare cases where an allogeneic bone marrow transplant has been performed for HLH in Odisha, marking a significant medical milestone for the state.

This success offers new hope for patients in Odisha who previously had to travel to other states for such advanced treatment. The procedure at KIMS was done at a much lower cost, making it more accessible for many families. The transplant was done at a significantly lower cost compared to private hospitals outside the state. Additionally, the procedure was covered under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, helping reduce the financial burden on the patient’s family.

Dr. Biswajit Bhuyan from the Department of Haematology and Dr. Palash Das from the Department of Paediatric Haematology at KIMS led the transplant. Their dedication and expertise were key to the success of this complex case.

It is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and offers advanced care at an affordable cost, enabling patients from Odisha and neighbouring regions to receive world-class treatment close to home.

Odisha State TNAI Elections & National Record Achievement

The Odisha State Branch of the Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI)  made history by setting a national record with more than 1500 voters participating in the recently held elections—marking the highest voter turnout among all states in the country. The election  showcased the dedication and enthusiasm of the nursing community in Odisha. The record-breaking participation in the elections reflects the growing unity and strength of nurses in Odisha.

Among the distinguished winners were Prof. (Dr.) Anasuya Pattanayak, Professor & HOD, Dept. of Community Health Nursing – President, Odisha State TNAI and Ms. Pragyan Parimita Mishra, DNS, PBMH, KIMS – Chairperson, Membership Committee, TNAI.

The elected representatives were felicitated by eminent personalities in the field of healthcare and education, including Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS; Dr. Niyati Das, Principal, Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences;  Dr. R.C. KI School of Pharmacy Organizes Guest Lecture on “Concept and Best Practices of Pharmacovigilance and Materiovigilance Programme of India”

KIIT School of Pharmacy, Bhubaneswar, organised an insightful lecture on May 5, 2025, on the  topic “Concept and Best Practices of Pharmacovigilance and Materiovigilance Programme of India.” The session was delivered by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Senior Principal Scientific Officer, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Government of India.

The event was graced by Brig. Prof.(Dr.) Ambika Prasad Mohanty, Director, KIMS and AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das, Dean and Principal, KIMS. The guest was introduced by Dr. Biswaranjan Behera, Principal, KIIT School of Pharmacy and was felicitated by the Director and Dean; Principal, KIMS.

Dr. Kalaiselvan comprehensively outlined the fundamentals of drug safety, rational use of medicines and the latest rules and regulations under the Indian Pharmacopoeia. He placed strong emphasis on the significant national initiatives of the Pharmacovigilance programme of India(PvPI) and the Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI) which are pivotal in ensuring the safety of medicines and medical devices in the country. These initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing patient safety and promoting the rational use of therapeutic products nationwide.

Overall, the guest lecture was highly informative, offering valuable perspectives on the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission’s recent efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. Considering the critical role of Pharmacy professionals in the assessment and reporting of adverse events associated with Drug and medical devices, Dr. Kalaiselvan provided deep insights into how their active participation can advance drug safety monitoring and improve healthcare outcomes. The lecture also shed light on career opportunities in Clinical Research Organisations (CROs) and regulatory affairs, followed by an engaging interactive session where students clarified doubts and explored future prospects. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal, KIIT School of Pharmacy.

KIMS Unveils Advanced CO2 Laser Equipment for Bloodless ENT Surgeries and Faster Recovery

In a major boost to advanced surgical care, a state-of-the-art CO2 laser machine for ENT and cancer surgeries was inaugurated today at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) by the Founder of KIITKISS, and KIMS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kabikanta Samantaray, Head of the Department of ENT, highlighted the wide-ranging capabilities of the new equipment. “The CO2 laser is one of the most advanced tools in ENT and cancer surgery. With this latest and best-in-class technology, we can perform all types of microsurgeries, including voice surgeries and complex vocal cord procedures,” he said.

Dr. Samantaray explained that the laser allows for precise, bloodless operations, especially in tongue, cheek, and vocal cord cancers. It is particularly effective for both early-stage and advanced cancers. “This technology ensures better outcomes and faster recovery for patients,” he added.

Affordability and accessibility are key priorities at KIMS. “While people often travel to cities like Mumbai or Delhi for laser surgeries—incurring high treatment and accommodation costs—we are now offering the same high-quality laser surgeries here at KIMS for just Rs 30,000,” Dr. Samantaray stated.

The laser-based treatments will be available 24×7, providing continuous care for patients in need. “There is a growing demand for laser surgery, and with this facility, we aim to offer enhanced quality of life through precise and minimally invasive treatment,” he affirmed.

Short-Term Training Programme on “Gene Polymorphism in Disease Biology” Inaugurated at KIMS

The Short-Term Training Programme (STTP) on “Gene Polymorphism in Disease Biology” commenced today at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The programme was formally inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) R. C. Das, Dean and Principal of KIMS, in the presence of several dignitaries  including Prof. (Dr.) Manas Ranjan Behera, Medical Superintendent; Prof. (Dr.) Shubhransu Patro, Associate Dean and Head of the Department of Medicine, KIMSProf. Suresh Chandra Satapathy, Director of Publications, KIIT DUDr. Amlan Panda, Assistant Registrar, KIIT DU and Dr. Bandita Panda, Research Scientist and Scientific Officer, Research and Development.

Digital Lab Manual containing detailed protocols for gene polymorphism analysis was released during the event, marking a significant step towards practical and research-based learning.

The detailed course structure and objectives were outlined by Prof. (Dr.) Shubhransu Patro, who emphasized the importance of understanding gene polymorphism in the context of modern medical science.

In the technical sessions that followed Prof. (Dr.) Manas Ranjan Behera presented on the relevance of gene polymorphism in disease diagnosis and therapeutics. Dr. Chandan Ku Ray Mohapatra, Head of the CTVS Department, delivered a presentation on the role of genome analysis in cardiovascular diseases. Prof. (Dr.) Santosh Dash, Head of the Neurology Department, elaborated on the impact of gene polymorphism in neurological disorders.

Department of Community Medicine, KIMS, Observes World Immunization Week-2025

The Department of Community Medicine, KIMS, observed World Immunization Week on 30th April 2025 at the Rural Health and Training Centre (RHTC), Kalarabanka and UHTC Neeladri Vihar with a series of awareness activities aimed at highlighting the critical importance of immunization in safeguarding public health.

The event was graced by the presence of eminent dignitaries including Prof. (Dr.) C. B. K. Mohanty, Pro VC KIIT;  Dr. Ajit Mohanty Director General KIMS; Dr. V. K. Sengupta M/O IC RHTC Kalarabanka; Dr. Sai Chandan Das, Associate Professor of Dept of Community Medicine; and Dr. Alpana Mishra Professor Department of Community Medicine, who chaired the proceedings and addressed the audience on the vital role of vaccines in disease prevention and health promotion.

The dignitaries enlightened the audience about the importance of vaccination and acknowledged the efforts of ASHA workers in all National Programmes. The highlight of the program was a short skit performed by the interns, depicting real-life scenarios and emphasizing the need for timely immunization. The performance was well-received by a diverse audience comprising beneficiaries, patients, healthcare staff, and ASHA workers, and served as an engaging medium for health education.

In addition, posters prepared and presented by the interns illustrated the key messages of the immunization campaign, providing clear and accessible information about vaccine schedules, benefits, and safety. These visual aids played a significant role in raising awareness and reinforcing the theme of the event. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks. The initiative successfully imparted relevant and practical knowledge to the attendees, thereby contributing to the ongoing efforts to increase immunization coverage and protect community health.

Institutional Ethics Committee KIMS Organises Good Clinical Practice Workshop

In its continuous pursuit of excellence in medical education and clinical research, the Institute Ethics Committee (IEC) of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, organized an intensive Workshop on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) on 25th April 2025. The central aim of the workshop was to foster a deeper understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) — a critical ethical and scientific standard for the design, conduct, performance, monitoring, auditing, recording, analysis, and reporting of clinical trials that involve human participants. Upholding GCP guidelines ensures not only the credibility of clinical research data but also protects the human rights, safety, and well-being of participants.

The workshop was conducted under the visionary leadership of AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das,  Principal of KIMS and supported by Prof. Dr. Lalatendu Mohanty, Vice-Principal, KIMS.

The event was spearheaded by Prof. (Dr.) Alpana Mishra, Member Secretary of the InstituteEthics Committee, KIMS, whose meticulous planning and hard work ensured the success of this academic initiative.

Prof. (Dr.) Bikash Medhi, a globally renowned figure in the field of pharmacology and clinical research, served as the keynote speaker and faculty for the workshop. Prof. Medhi has played critical roles in several national, and international regulatory and quality initiatives and leadership roles in GCP, NABH and CPCSEA standards. He is the current Chairman of the GLP Program initiated by the Government of India and serves as an Indian representative in IUPS and IUPHAR.

The committee was also privileged to have Dr. Sidhartha Giri, Scientist F, RMRC, Bhubaneswar, a distinguished academician and researcher. His multi-disciplinary expertise in microbiology, clinical research, and epidemiology added valuable perspectives to the workshop.

The workshop featured a series of engaging and in-depth sessions, where Prof. Dr. Bikash Medhi and Dr Giri systematically explained the core elements of GCP and their practical applications. Topics included Historical evolution and importance of GCP in clinical research, Phases of Clinical Trials, Responsibilities of Investigators and Sponsors, Role of Institutional Ethics Committees (IEC) and Regulatory Bodies and Guidelines: CDSCO, ICMR guidelines, ICH-GCP, and WHO-GCP standards. Informed Consent Process, Adverse Event Reporting and other important topics were discussed. Each session was complemented with real-world case examples, interactive discussions, and participant-driven Q&A rounds, making the workshop highly engaging and informative.

Faculty members, Postgraduate students and Members of the Institutional Ethics Committee of KIMS appreciated the workshop. In her concluding address, Prof. (Dr.) Alpana Mishra thanked the guest speakers, dignitaries, Prof. (Dr.) Aparajita Priyadarshini, Alternate Member Secretary, IEC, Mr. Mamoon Rasid, staff of IEC and all attendees for their support.

Department of Anaesthesiology Organizes Workshop Hemodynamic Monitoring

The Postgraduate Department of Anaesthesiology KIMS in association with the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, Bhubaneswar city branch organised a workshop on HEMODYNAMIC MONITORING on 27th April, 2025 under the guidance of Prof Dr Amrita Panda, HOD Dept of Anaesthesiology, Organizing Chairperson.

The inauguration of the workshop was graced by Principal & Dean Prof. (AVM) Dr.R.C.Das; Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. Manas Ranjan Behera; Dr Sanjoy Majhi, Joint Director KCC, along with other invited guest faculties. The eminent national faculties Dr. Subhendu Sarkar (HOD Cardiac Anesthesia, Desun Hospital, Kolkata); Prof Dr. Satyajit Mishra (HOD Anaesthesiology, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar); Dr Devishree Das (AIIMS, Bhubaneswar); Dr. Dharmajiban (Senior Cardiac Anesthesia Consultant, Care Hospital) shared their vast clinical experience and research insights. It was an interactive session among the speakers, faculty members and post graduate residents of KIMS medical college.

The workshop covered interative hands-on-training in assessing and managing hemodynamic status, real world scenarios with expert guidance. Participants had the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment, practice data interpretation and engage in simulation based learning under the guidance of expert professionals. The event also featured case based discussions, allowing participants to correlate theoretical knowledge with real world clinical scenarios.

The workshop proved to be a highly enriching experience, strengthening the ability to access and manage hemodynamic parameters effectively in patient care. Feedback from all the participants was overwhelmingly positive.
