KIMS Conducts First Bone Marrow Transplant, Marks New Milestone in Cancer Care

The Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has successfully conducted its first bone marrow transplantation (BMT), a significant step in advanced cancer treatment in Odisha. The procedure was performed on a patient from Nayagarh district, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The patient has fully recovered and will be discharged soon.

The transplantation, led by Dr. Biswajit Bhuyan, Consultant, Clinical Hematology, and Dr. Palash Das, Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist, involved Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation (ABMT) – a process where the patient’s own stem cells are collected, stored, and reintroduced after intensive chemotherapy.

“The patient came to us about six months ago, unable to walk or carry out daily activities due to severe bone pain,” said Dr. Bhuyan. “After diagnostic tests, we identified multiple myeloma. Though chemotherapy was initiated, it was not a definitive solution. For patients above 60, bone marrow transplant is often the best course of treatment.”

The patient’s daughter said that the family had lost all hopes as her father was left completely paralysed due to the illness.

The successful transplant has allowed the sexagenarian to regain normalcy and lead an active life, demonstrating KIMS’s commitment to offering the most advanced treatment and care that were available in major metros. Notably, the patient had to incur no expense during the treatment as he was covered under BSKY.

Dr. Palash Das highlighted that the patient was being initially treated for arthritis till the correct diagnosis was made.

KIMS now plans to expand its bone marrow transplantation services, introducing Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant and Haploidentical (Haplo) Transplantation in the near future, Dr Das said.

The Founder of KIITKISS & KIMS Dr. Achyuta Samanta has wished the patient a long and healthy life and has greeted the doctors and the staff for the success of the bone marrow transplant.
