KIMS Doctors Successfully Treat Patient Afflicted With ‘Nodopathy’, an Extremely Rare Neurological Disorder

Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have successfully treated a 34-year-old woman suffering from Nodopathy and Paranodopathy, a newly discovered and extremely rare neurological disease that causes severe nerve damage leading to complete paralysis.

The disease is so rare that no data is available on its incidence in India, and it has been included in medical literature only a couple of years ago. Owing to its recent discovery, diagnosis and treatment remain major challenges across the world.

The doctors at KIMS took up this medical challenge with determination, ensuring the patient’s recovery despite the rarity and complexity of the disease. The case demonstrates high-end treatment facilities and clinical expertise available at KIMS as well as the expertise of the doctors, cementing its position as a leading centre for advanced neurological and critical care in the region.

The patient, Subhashee Chal from Baripada in Mayurbhanj district, was admitted to KIMS on June 24 after she became completely paralysed, unable to move any part of her body except her head. Despite her critical condition, she remained fully conscious and aware throughout.

“It all began suddenly one fine morning when I couldn’t move my hands or feet,” Subhashee recalled. “I never thought I would return alive. The doctors at KIMS gave me a new life.”

Dr. Santosh Dash, Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, explained, “The patient was paralysed neck down and unable to walk or speak. We had to put her on a ventilator. This disease is exceptionally rare. Diagnosis is not possible within Odisha as the required blood tests are conducted in Kerala.”

He added, “The best part was the patient’s trust in the doctors and the hospital. The KIMS management and our Founder Sir deserve thanks for their unwavering support in such a challenging case.”

Dr. Abinash Badapanda, Assistant Professor, Department of Critical Care, KIMS, said, “She was on a ventilator for over two months. Managing such a rare and complex neurological case is a milestone in critical care treatment.

The patient has been discharged after a long stay in the hospital and is leading a normal life now.

The Founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS Dr. Achyuta Samanta has congratulated the doctors for the pathbreaking treatment provided to the patient, wishing her a long and healthy life.

KIMS Performs Odisha’s First TACE Procedure on 2.7-Year-Old, Saves Child with Rare Liver Tumour

A team of doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here has successfully treated a 2.7-year-old girl suffering from hepatoblastoma, a rare liver tumour that had spread to her lungs. With this, KIMS has become one of the handful of hospitals in India and the first in Odisha to carry out the highly complex Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) procedure on such a young child.

The case involved the coordinated efforts of 15 doctors across seven departments, making it one of the most challenging multidisciplinary procedures undertaken at KIMS. The little one, who has completely recovered and enjoys her day playing with her friends in the hospital corridors, has braved a medical journey that would test even the strongest of adults. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and hope.

The girl was brought to KIMS after months of worsening abdominal pain, swelling, and loss of appetite, despite multiple consultations across the state. Detailed investigations revealed the unthinkable – the girl had hepatoblastoma, a rare liver tumour, which had already spread to her lungs. Under the care of Prof. (Dr.) Palash Das, Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist, she was immediately started on chemotherapy. Though her condition improved, the liver tumour was still too large for surgery.

At this stage, Dr. Swati Das, Interventional Radiologist, suggested TACE—a procedure where chemotherapy is delivered directly into the blood vessel feeding the tumour. The tumour responded significantly, shrinking enough to make surgery possible.

Subsequently, an extended liver resection (non-anatomical liver resection) was performed by Dr. Vedavyas Mohapatra (Surgical Gastroenterology) and Dr. Varsha. M Totadri (Paediatric surgery), under the guidance of Dr. P.K. Jena (HOD, Paediatric Surgery), with critical support from the anaesthesia team. Post-operative care was provided by the Paediatric ICU team and Dr. Jiten Sahoo, Paediatric Gastroenterologist.

For her, this was nothing short of a medical breakthrough. It was not only the first time such a complex procedure was performed in Odisha on a child so young, but it also placed KIMS among a handful of hospitals in India capable of carrying out this rare intervention.

The Founder of KIIT and KISS Dr. Achyuta Samanta has congratulated the team of doctors for the path-breaking procedure and wished the little one a long and healthy life.
