Dr. Debendra began his medical career at Central Hospital, Dhanbad in 1988 and served there until 1994. He completed a Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi, in 1991. Over the years, he served in various Central Hospitals under Coal India Ltd., retiring as Chief of Medical Services in 2019. He subsequently worked at the District Headquarters Hospital, Keonjhar (later Government Medical College, Keonjhar) for over three years. Currently, he is serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Surgery at KIMS, Bhubaneswar.
