The dawn of 8th May marked a special occasion as the entire hospital came together to celebrate World Thalassemia Day. Thalassemia is an inherited congenital anemia in which affected individuals require lifelong blood transfusions. KIMS Hospital, through its robust Departments of Immunohematology & Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Hematology, and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, caters to more than 100 children who receive regular leukoreduced fresh packed red blood cell transfusions every month.
Under the chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) Sukanta Tripathy and the leadership of Prof.(Dr.) Palsh Das, the departments of Transfusion Medicine and Haematology spearheaded the commemoration with profound enthusiasm. The event brought together and honored voluntary blood donors, patients and parents of children with thalassemia, physicians, and NGOs working in the field of thalassemia care under one roof.
An intensive scientific session focusing on improving quality of life and introducing newer therapies for thalassemia warriors was conducted. Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Pathak, Director and Head of Max Hospital, New Delhi, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and appreciated the efforts being taken to improve thalassemia care.
Director SBTC Dr. Pradip Patra and Additional Director Dr. Debasis Mishra also attended the event and informed the audience about various government schemes available for individuals with thalassemia.
The program was attended by leading hematologists and a host of physicians from the Departments of Endocrinology, General Medicine, and Pediatrics. The event fostered meaningful discussions on the challenges faced in thalassemia care and concluded with brainstorming sessions and a renewed commitment to advancing thalassemia care to newer standards.
