The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at KIMS observed World Plastic Surgery Day today with an awareness programme underscoring the specialty’s essential yet often misunderstood role in modern medicine.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sunil Kumar Rout, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, explained that the observance of this day originated in India and is tentatively considered to coincide with the birth anniversary of ancient surgeon Susruta. “Plastic surgery is not an organ-specific specialty, leading to considerable confusion among the general public and even among doctors. This day aims to spread awareness about the critical work being done in this field,” he said. He also mentioned about plans to set up a dedicated burn unit at KIMS.
Principal and Dean of KIMS, Prof. (Dr.) R.C. Das, praised the specialty, saying, “Plastic surgery is at the pinnacle of medical science. Your services are well recognized.”
Medical Superintendent Dr. Manas Ranjan Behera announced plans to start MCh courses in plastic surgery this year to strengthen training and expand services. Prof. Dr. Bansidhar Mulia proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Samir Patel and others were also present.
As part of the event, Dr. Jayanta Lenka from the department gave a presentation on recent procedures performed at KIMS including lymphedema debulking procedures, liposuction for gynecomastia and body contouring, finger re-implantation surgeries, post-burn contracture release and treatment of vascular malformations.
In addition to these, the Department of Plastic Surgery routinely offers cleft lip and palate repair for children, hair transplant services, cancer reconstruction (including breast reconstruction), limb-saving trauma surgery, microsurgery for complex wounds, diabetic foot care to prevent amputations, and self-image management to support psychological recovery.
